The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) is a feature-based database that interconnects and uniquely identifies the stream segments or reaches that make up the nation's surface water drainage system. This local resolution NHD is a result of conflating the original USGS NHD attributes onto the unattributed set of hydrography developed through the initial production efforts of the Tennessee Base Mapping Program (TNBMP). The USGS NHD data was originally developed at 1:100,000-scale and exists at that scale for the whole country. This NHD was enhanced at 1:24,000/1:12,000 scale and adds detail to the original 1:100,000-scale NHD. The NHD contains reach codes for networked features, flow direction, names, and centerline representations for areal water bodies. Reaches are also defined on waterbodies. The NHD also incorporates the National Spatial Data Infrastructure framework criteria established by the Federal Geographic Data Committee. The TNBMP hydrography is more detailed and accurate than the original NHD. It was derived at a scale of 1:4,800 scale (rural areas) and 1:1,200 scale (urban areas) from black and white digital orthophotos. The detailed geometry has no feature attributes such as stream names and reach codes. This local resolution NHD extends the NHD attributes to the detailed TNBMP hydrography and extends the reach codes to all features in the local resolution NHD, and extends the flow direction attributes and builds an expanded geometric network in the local resolution NHD.
